About

Who is involved?

Residents on the Eastern Shore and a group of environmental experts from the University of Virginia and Old Dominion University are working together on a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Karen Downing and Allison Bradshaw lead a Community Advisory Committee that is helping to build an app for local decision makers to understand what communities on the Eastern Shore are most at risk for negative climate impacts.

Project goals

The goal of this work is to understand the experiences and historical knowledge of Eastern Shore residents. Ideally, our research can support the Shore’s rural communities to prepare for long-term stresses, like too much water causing flooding or too little water affecting crops, and sudden events like big storms. To help residents and community planners make informed decisions about the future, we are creating an interactive app with information about hazards and impacts of different factors that affect the Eastern Shore.

The timeline

We started this work in 2021. We continue to build this knowledge hub with the community and are launching the final Livability Tool app in Summer 2026.
